Quesada Cigars

Quesada Cigars is a family-owned premium-cigar manufacturer based in Santiago, Dominican Republic. The operating company began in 1974 as Manufactura de Tabacos, S.A., widely known as MATASA, but the family's tobacco history reaches back through Cuba to the late nineteenth century.

The company combines factory ownership, cigar manufacturing, proprietary brands, contract production and international commercial relationships. Its identity must be separated by era: the historic leaf business, MATASA, the Quesada-named portfolio, Casa Magna collaborations and the current fifth-generation ownership led by Raquel and Patricia Quesada Vega.

From Spain and Cuba into Tobacco

The family story begins after relatives from Spain settled in Cuba. In the late 1800s, a debt was reportedly paid with tobacco, leading Antero González and Constantino González into leaf purchasing, brokerage and export.

Through marriage, the tobacco enterprise passed into the Quesada family. This history explains the company's multi-generation claim, but the modern cigar factory did not begin until the family rebuilt its business in the Dominican Republic.

The Dominican Republic and Exile

The family began working with Dominican tobacco in 1929 while maintaining its base in Cuba. After the Cuban Revolution, Manuel Quesada y González moved the family to Santiago and established a Dominican leaf operation in 1961.

Young Manuel "Manolo" Quesada learned tobacco alongside his father and other family mentors. The move preserved leaf knowledge and commercial relationships that later supported an independent manufacturing company.

MATASA and the 1974 Factory

Manufactura de Tabacos, S.A., or MATASA, opened in Santiago's free trade zone in June 1974. Accounts describe a very small beginning with limited capital, basic equipment and only a few rollers.

The factory expanded through contract production, private-label work and proprietary projects. This manufacturing history is broader than the modern Quesada brand name and includes many relationships whose ownership and distribution changed over time.

Manolo Quesada and Factory Growth

Manolo became the company's best-known leader, blender and industry representative. The factory survived the cigar boom, shifting contracts, family losses and changes in the leaf-trading business while building a reputation for Dominican production.

A 2002 plane crash killed Manolo's brother Alvaro, nephew Alvarito and executive Julio Fajardo. The tragedy shaped the family company and later inspired commemorative work including the Tributo name.

The Fifth Generation

Raquel and Patricia Quesada Vega became prominent fifth-generation leaders, alongside other relatives who held production, agricultural, design, technology and commercial roles at different times.

In 2024, ownership was consolidated in Raquel and Patricia after the Quesada Vega family acquired the remaining family interests. Manolo shifted into an advisory role while recovering from serious health problems.

Ownership, Leadership and Factory Model

Quesada Cigars is now owned and led by sisters Raquel and Patricia Quesada Vega. Their 2024 transition preserved the company as a family-owned Dominican manufacturer while formally moving control to the next generation.

The Santiago factory produces Quesada brands and selected outside projects. Some families, especially Casa Magna, include collaboration or Nicaraguan production, so factory identity must be verified by line rather than assumed from the corporate headquarters.

Quesada Core and Anniversary Cigars

The family surname first appeared prominently on a company cigar with the Quesada 35th Anniversary in 2009. Reserva Privada, anniversary projects and later core expressions built a direct Quesada-branded portfolio.

Casa Magna

Casa Magna began as a collaboration between Manolo Quesada and Néstor Plasencia. Colorado and later expressions may be produced in Nicaragua or the Dominican Republic, making factory and edition fields essential.

Quesada Oktoberfest

Oktoberfest is a recurring seasonal family created around pairing cigars with beer. The blend, packaging, sizes and production quantities have changed over time, so each annual edition needs its own record.

España, Tributo and Heisenberg

Edición España reflects the family's Spanish ties, Tributo carries family memorial meaning and Heisenberg was built around undisclosed-blend marketing. Each line tells a different part of the company story.

Contract Manufacturing and Legacy Brands

MATASA's history includes production for many brand owners and distributors. A cigar made at the Quesada factory is not automatically owned by Quesada, and historic contracts should not be presented as current without evidence.
