La Aurora

La Aurora was founded by Eduardo León Jimenes in 1903 and describes itself as the oldest cigar factory in the Dominican Republic. What began in Guazumal with six rollers and a donkey developed into a multigenerational Dominican manufacturer whose cigars are distributed internationally.

The company is owned and led by Guillermo León Herbert, a member of the founding family. Production is centered at La Aurora's operation in the Guazumal-Tamboril area of Santiago. Its portfolio includes La Aurora, León Jimenes, Príncipes and Family Reserve, with premium handmade, mass-market and special programs.

A Dominican Factory Founded in 1903

Eduardo León Jimenes founded La Aurora on October 3, 1903, when he was 18 years old. His family had already spent a generation growing tobacco, but the cigar business began modestly in Guazumal with six employees rolling cigars and a donkey carrying finished goods to local buyers.

The early signature was Preferidos, a carefully shaped double figurado made for the local market. That cigar remains central to La Aurora's heritage story: it connects the original workshop to the modern Preferidos 1903 family without requiring the manufacturer page to list every blend, size or package.

Santiago, the Lion and International Growth

In 1912, the company moved to Calle Independencia in Santiago and adopted the lion as its symbol. La Aurora expanded with the Dominican tobacco economy, survived political and commercial changes, and resumed exports in 1963. León Jimenes later became a separate cigar brand within the family's tobacco enterprise.

The cigar operation ultimately grew alongside a much larger family business, but La Aurora preserved its own factory identity. In 2007, production moved back toward its geographic roots at the Guazumal-Tamboril free-zone site. The company marked its 120th anniversary in 2023 and now sells across more than 80 countries.

Family Ownership and Corporate Independence

Guillermo León Herbert joined the wider family group in 1983 and took leadership responsibility at La Aurora in the 1990s. Under his direction, the factory invested in Dominican wrapper development, expanded the premium portfolio and created the 100 Años cigar as an all-Dominican expression for the company's centennial.

In 2011, Guillermo acquired full ownership of La Aurora and separated the premium cigar manufacturer from Grupo León Jimenes. That transaction is essential to the present-day entity story: La Aurora remains connected to the founding family, but it operates as an independent cigar company under Guillermo's ownership.

Factory, Tobacco and Manufacturing Footprint

La Aurora's principal cigar factory and headquarters are in the Guazumal-Tamboril free-zone area of Santiago, Dominican Republic. The operation makes handmade premium cigars as well as higher-volume products. Official materials also describe education, tourism and hospitality activities organized through La Aurora Cigar World.

The company uses tobacco from its own agricultural work and from contracted farmers supervised by its agronomy team. Its blends can incorporate Dominican leaf with tobacco from Nicaragua, Ecuador, Brazil, Cameroon or other origins. Each cigar page should therefore verify its actual wrapper, binder and filler rather than infer a blend from the factory address.

Ownership, President and U.S. Leadership

Guillermo León Herbert is La Aurora's owner and president. Current official materials do not identify a separate chief executive officer for the Dominican parent company; president is the top public executive title used for Guillermo. That distinction avoids assigning a corporate title the company itself does not publish.

La Aurora USA is the company's U.S. sales, marketing and distribution arm, led by chief executive officer Ed McKenna. The U.S. organization should be distinguished from the Dominican manufacturer: the two are related, but their leadership titles and operating responsibilities are not interchangeable.

Owned Brands and Manufacturing Relationships

La Aurora's official Dominican materials identify La Aurora, León Jimenes, Príncipes and Family Reserve as its principal current brands. These names cover different market positions, from handmade premium cigars and family tributes to higher-volume products. They should remain separate entities within the manufacturer hierarchy.

La Aurora's history records a 2011 agreement with John Middleton, an Altria company, to manufacture Black & Mild. Contract and private-label assignments can change, and the company does not publish a complete current client list. Ashologist should identify the documented relationship as historical unless current production is independently verified.

Preferidos 1903 and the La Aurora 1903 Families

Preferidos preserves the difficult double-figurado shape associated with La Aurora's earliest years and now appears in several wrapper expressions. The broader 1903 families, including Cameroon and other core blends, give the portfolio an accessible heritage anchor. They are related house collections, not one interchangeable cigar.

100 Años and Anniversary Editions

100 Años was developed for La Aurora's centennial as a Dominican puro and became one of the company's most important premium statements. Later anniversary projects, including the 115th and 120th, use milestone releases to interpret the factory's leaf inventory and blending history rather than simply repeat the original centennial cigar.

107, ADN Dominicano and 1495

The 107 series began as an anniversary-era family and expanded into multiple expressions. ADN Dominicano emphasizes Andullo, a traditional pressure-fermented Dominican tobacco, while 1495 references the island's tobacco history. Together they show how La Aurora combines an old factory identity with distinct modern blend platforms.

Family Creed and Current Innovation

Family Creed debuted with Fuerte Sol in 2025 and continued with Perseverancia in 2026. The series is framed around León family values and provides a current premium platform outside the numeric and anniversary lines. Limited projects and the Prime Collection add a collector layer whose components and availability may rotate.

León Jimenes, Family Reserve and Príncipes

León Jimenes is a longstanding sister brand with its own identity and blend families. Family Reserve includes tributes such as Fernando León and Guillermo León, while Príncipes serves a different, higher-volume segment. Grouping them under La Aurora for manufacturing context should not erase the product and audience distinctions among the brands.

La Aurora in the Ashology Network
