La Flor Dominicana is a family-owned premium cigar company founded by Litto Gomez and Ines Lorenzo-Gomez. The business began in the Dominican Republic in 1994 under the Los Libertadores name and adopted La Flor Dominicana in 1996. Its U.S. headquarters is in Coral Gables, Florida, while its cigars are produced at Tabacalera La Flor S.A. in Tamboril, Dominican Republic.

The company is best understood as an integrated family operation rather than as a single cigar line. Its La Canela farm supplies important Dominican tobacco, its Tamboril factory controls cigar production, and a family-owned box factory supports special packaging. The portfolio ranges from the Ligero and Double Ligero families to Andalusian Bull, Air Bender, La Nox and limited projects.

From Jewelry to Los Libertadores

Litto Gomez was born in Spain, raised in Uruguay and later entered the jewelry business in Miami. After an armed robbery at his store, he left that field and pursued cigars despite having no inherited tobacco business or family cigar-making lineage. Ines Lorenzo, his business partner and future wife, brought operating discipline and led distribution from South Florida.

In 1994, Litto and Ines joined a partner to launch Los Libertadores. The first factory was a small operation with four rolling stations in Villa Gonzalez, Dominican Republic. Its early cigars reflected the era and Litto's palate: comparatively mild blends built around light wrappers and Dominican tobacco.

The La Flor Dominicana Name

A dispute ended the original partnership, and the Gomez family continued independently. Because the Los Libertadores brand name did not carry into the new arrangement, they adopted La Flor Dominicana in 1996. The name means 'the Dominican flower' and gave the young company a fresh identity during the mid-1990s cigar boom.

The company's identity evolved with Litto's palate and access to better raw material. Travel, study and experimentation moved the portfolio away from an exclusively mild Dominican model and toward fuller, more concentrated blends. That change eventually made strength, ligero tobacco and unconventional shapes central to the way smokers recognize La Flor Dominicana.

Farm, Factory and Vertical Integration

La Flor Dominicana pursued greater control by investing in its own tobacco farm in La Canela in the Dominican Republic's Cibao Valley. The farm became a source of the Dominican fillers and binders used throughout the portfolio and enabled experiments with wrapper tobacco. Official company materials describe the property as fundamental to the flavors associated with the brand.

In 1999, the company began the long process of creating a cigar entirely from its own Dominican tobacco, including wrapper. That effort became the LG Dominican Puro program. The farm also supplies the limited Litto Gomez Small Batch releases, which use selected lots from individual harvests rather than a fixed, high-volume formula.

Tabacalera La Flor S.A. and In-House Production

Current La Flor Dominicana cigars are made at the family's Tabacalera La Flor S.A. factory in Tamboril, near Santiago. The company says it wanted its own factory from the beginning so it could control quality and create an environment shaped around its employees and visitors. Industry reporting consistently identifies the Tamboril operation as the production home of the portfolio.

Vertical integration does not mean every leaf in every cigar comes from La Canela. Many blends pair estate-grown Dominican tobacco with wrappers or binders from Ecuador, Brazil, Mexico, Nicaragua or Cameroon. Ownership, Leadership and the Next Generation

La Flor Dominicana remains owned by co-founders Litto Gomez and Ines Lorenzo-Gomez. The company's current contact page identifies Ines as president and founder and lists Litto as founder. Litto remains closely associated with tobacco, blending and production, while Ines has long directed the commercial and distribution side of the business.

Their sons are active in the company. Antonio 'Tony' Gomez is vice president of international sales, and Litto D. Gomez is vice president of retail partnerships and sales. Their product work makes the succession story visible: Tony developed Chapter I and Capitulo II, while Litto Jr. led the Solis project with help from his father and brother.

Signature Style: Ligero, Power and Unusual Shapes

La Flor Dominicana helped make the word 'ligero' familiar to premium-cigar consumers. Ligero leaves come from the upper portion of the tobacco plant and are associated with greater strength and concentration. The Ligero and Double Ligero names turned that agricultural term into an unmistakable portfolio signal, though the company also offers milder and more restrained expressions.

Shape is another part of the company's identity. Litto developed the flattened, wedge-headed Chisel after chewing a traditional torpedo into a new form, and the shape later received trademark protection. The curved Andalusian Bull Salomon extended that interest in difficult figurados and helped turn an unusual silhouette into a flagship.

Ligero and Double Ligero are foundational full-bodied families built around estate-grown Dominican filler and binder. Air Bender, La Nox and Wrapper-Led Expressions

Air Bender pairs estate-grown Dominican filler and binder with a Habano wrapper, while La Nox uses a Brazilian maduro wrapper over a San Andres binder and Dominican tobacco. Colorado Oscuro, Cameroon Cabinet, Coronado and Oro broaden the company's wrapper and strength range. These are distinct product families, not alternate names for one house blend.

Litto Gomez Dominican Puro and Small Batch

The LG Dominican Puro program represents the company's effort to produce a cigar entirely from tobacco grown on its farm, with vintage editions built around aged Dominican leaf. Litto Gomez Small Batch uses especially prized lots separated after individual harvests. Both lines express the farm's role more directly than the broader portfolio does.

Family Projects, Anniversaries and Limited Releases

Chapter I and Capitulo II, Solis, 1994, La Volcada, Factory Press and anniversary releases show how personal stories and limited formats move through the portfolio. The 30 Years project also used humidors made at the Gomez family's Dominican box factory.
