J.C. Newman Cigar Company

J.C. Newman Cigar Company is a privately held, four-generation cigar business founded by Julius Caeser Newman in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1895. The company now operates from El Reloj, its historic factory and headquarters in Tampa's Ybor City. Its manufacturing identity spans three countries: American production at El Reloj, Nicaraguan hand-rolled production at company-owned PENSA, and Dominican cigars made through the Newman family's long partnership with Tabacalera A. Fuente.

That structure makes J.C. Newman unusually broad for an independent family company. It preserves working American cigar machinery and a small hand-rolling room in Tampa, controls a large premium-cigar factory in Esteli, and collaborates with the Fuente family on Dominican brands and U.S. distribution. An accurate profile therefore needs to identify the factory behind each brand instead of treating every J.C. Newman cigar as a Tampa-made product.

From an Immigrant Apprenticeship to an Ohio Factory

The Newman family immigrated from Austria-Hungary to the United States in 1888. Julius Caeser Newman chose cigar making while his siblings entered the tailoring trade. After an apprenticeship, his mother Hannah secured an order for 500 cigars and loaned him $50 for tobacco. J.C. Newman dates the company's founding to May 5, 1895.

The first operation worked from the Newman family home. By the early 1900s, it had moved into a Cleveland storefront and grown into a significant local factory. The company later opened Ohio facilities, adopted cigar machinery and survived industry consolidation, the Great Depression and wartime disruption. A 1927 merger created M. & N. Cigar Manufacturers, Inc.; the corporate name returned to J.C. Newman Cigar Company in 1997.

The Move to Tampa and El Reloj

By the early 1950s, large integrated cigar companies were making it difficult for smaller Ohio manufacturers to compete for tobacco. The Newmans chose premium cigars and Tampa's established cigar-making labor base as their path forward. Stanford J. Newman helped move the family operation from Cleveland to the E. Regensburg & Sons factory in Ybor City in 1954.

Built in 1910, the red-brick building is known as El Reloj - Spanish for 'the clock' - because of its prominent clock tower. It is the last large traditional cigar factory still producing cigars in Ybor City and the company's headquarters, shipping center, museum and public factory destination. J.C. Newman restored the building around its 125th anniversary and continues to make cigars there by hand and on hand-operated antique machines.

Four Generations of Newman Family Leadership

Founder J.C. Newman was followed by his son Stanford J. Newman. Stanford's sons, Eric and Bobby, entered the business in the 1970s and helped consolidate ownership in 1986 through a leveraged family buyout. Eric serves as president and oversees manufacturing; Bobby is executive vice president with a long-standing sales and marketing role.

Eric's son Drew Newman represents the fourth generation as an owner and general counsel. Official company materials list Eric, Bobby and Drew as the current owners. The Fuente-Newman Partnership

The Newman and Fuente families began their modern operating partnership in the 1980s. Tabacalera A. Fuente first made La Unica for J.C. Newman in the Dominican Republic, and the relationship later expanded to Cuesta-Rey, Diamond Crown, MAXIMUS, Julius Caeser and Black Diamond. Diamond Crown was introduced in 1995 for J.C. Newman's centennial after Stanford Newman and Carlos Fuente developed the project together.

The families also formed a U.S. distribution company in 1990, now known as the Arturo Fuente Cigar Company, using J.C. Newman's sales and distribution infrastructure. Building J.C. Newman PENSA in Nicaragua

Quorum launched in 2003 through outside Nicaraguan production. As its volume grew, Eric and Bobby Newman sought more control over manufacturing and tobacco inventory. In 2011, they established Puros de Esteli Nicaragua, S.A., known as PENSA, in Esteli. The company-owned operation now makes Brick House, Perla del Mar, El Baton, Quorum, Yagua and other cigars.

PENSA gives J.C. Newman direct control over fermentation, sorting, stripping, rolling and quality assurance for its principal Nicaraguan families. Official company materials describe PENSA as Nicaragua's second-largest cigar factory. The exact employee and daily-production counts can change, so the evergreen manufacturer page should emphasize ownership, location and brand assignments rather than turn short-term capacity figures into permanent claims.

American Production at El Reloj

El Reloj supports two forms of production. Hand-operated antique machines make established value and specialty products such as Factory Throwouts and Trader Jack's. A separate hand-rolling operation produces limited premium cigars, including The American and Angel Cuesta, along with selected collaborations and factory-focused releases.

The American is the clearest expression of the Tampa program. Reintroduced under Drew Newman, it is made with American-grown tobaccos and U.S.-made packaging. Diamond Crown

Diamond Crown was introduced in 1995 to celebrate the company's 100th anniversary. It became the flagship of a Fuente-made Dominican family that includes Diamond Crown Classic, Maduro, MAXIMUS, Julius Caeser and Black Diamond. Brick House

Quorum

Quorum is a handmade Nicaraguan value-cigar family introduced in 2003. Its growth exposed the risk of relying on an outside factory and helped drive the creation of PENSA. For a manufacturer profile, that operational role is more important than listing every Quorum wrapper or size.

Perla del Mar and El Baton

Perla del Mar and El Baton are historic names revived for modern Nicaraguan production. Perla del Mar returned as a box-pressed family and now includes multiple wrapper expressions. El Baton reaches back to a Newman brand first produced in the early twentieth century. Both are currently associated with PENSA.

The American and Angel Cuesta

The American is hand rolled at El Reloj from American-grown tobacco and uses U.S.-made packaging, making it the company's clearest statement about domestic cigar production. Angel Cuesta is another limited Tampa-handmade family, reviving a name connected to the historic Cuesta-Rey tradition. Together they anchor the small premium hand-rolling program inside El Reloj.
