Dunbarton Tobacco & Trust

Dunbarton Tobacco & Trust is an independent premium-cigar company founded by Steve Saka in 2015 after his tenure leading Drew Estate. Named for Dunbarton, New Hampshire, where Steve and Cindy Saka live and established the business, DTT entered the market with Sobremesa and quickly built a portfolio centered on Saka's blending direction and exacting production standards.

The company does not own a cigar factory. It develops and controls its brands while working principally with Fábrica de Tabacos Joya de Nicaragua and Nicaragua American Cigars S.A. (NACSA) in Estelí. Sobremesa, Mi Querida, Sin Compromiso, Umbagog, Muestra de Saka and newer projects make the factory-by-line relationship essential to accurate publishing.

Steve Saka Before Dunbarton Tobacco & Trust

Steve Saka entered cigar culture as an enthusiast and early online writer before becoming an executive consultant to JR Cigar in 2000. He later joined Drew Estate, where he became president and chief executive officer and was closely associated with the development and commercialization of Liga Privada and the company's premium-cigar growth.

Saka left Drew Estate in 2013 and observed a two-year noncompete period. His return mattered because retailers already knew his blending work, candid communication and emphasis on tobacco selection, but the new business still had to establish an identity separate from Drew Estate.

The 2015 Launch and the Meaning of the Name

Saka formed Dunbarton Tobacco & Trust with his wife, Cindy Saka, as a partner. The name references their New Hampshire hometown; the Trust portion was connected to a historic bank building considered for the company's headquarters and also communicates the confidence required between maker, retailer and smoker.

Sobremesa debuted at the 2015 IPCPR trade show as DTT's first cigar. Production at Joya de Nicaragua connected Saka's new company to a respected Estelí factory he knew through his earlier industry work, while the blend and brand voice established DTT as a deliberately small, connoisseur-focused enterprise.

From Sobremesa to a Broader Portfolio

Mi Querida followed in 2016 and introduced a Connecticut broadleaf-centered family made at NACSA. Umbagog extended that broadleaf work into a rugged, value-conscious role, while Todos Las Dias offered a stronger Nicaraguan direction and Muestra de Saka became a vehicle for small-batch, vitola-specific releases.

Sin Compromiso arrived in 2018 after years of development at Joya de Nicaragua. Sobremesa Brûlée, Mi Querida Triqui Traca and Mi Querida Black expanded established families, while StillWell Star crossed premium cigars with selected pipe-tobacco components and Red Meat Lovers developed from a retailer collaboration into a regular brand.

Family Ownership and Leadership

Dunbarton Tobacco & Trust remains a privately held family company. Steve Saka is founder, owner, blender and the principal public voice; Cindy Saka is a co-owner and business partner. The company should not be described as owned by either of its production factories or by Saka's former employer.

Saka uses the Spanish terms ligador and catador de puros to describe his blending and tasting role. His public explanations are unusually detailed, but company-level editorial copy should still distinguish a founder's stated intent from independent product evaluation.

Headquarters, Sales and Distribution

DTT is based in Dunbarton, New Hampshire, and sells through selected premium-cigar retailers. Its distribution model is independent and selective rather than a subsidiary structure under a major multinational cigar group. Market access, allocations and retailer eligibility can differ by product.

The company's strong founder identity makes Steve Saka a major search theme, but DTT should remain the manufacturer-page entity. Biographical material belongs here only when it explains company history, blending leadership, ownership or a documented brand relationship.

A Partner-Factory Manufacturing Model

DTT's portfolio is made primarily at two independent Estelí factories. Joya de Nicaragua produces Sobremesa, Sin Compromiso, many Muestra de Saka releases, StillWell Star and selected limited projects. NACSA produces Mi Querida, Umbagog, Red Meat Lovers and other verified lines or editions.

Factory relationships can change by family, expression and year. Muestra de Saka is intentionally not one permanent blend, and special projects can split production between factories. Ashologist records should name the exact factory only after checking the specific cigar and release.

Sobremesa

Sobremesa launched DTT and remains its foundational family. Sobremesa Solita, Brûlée and newer extensions use distinct presentations and blend directions while sharing the larger brand story. The line is made at Joya de Nicaragua, but each expression and vitola needs its own specification.

Mi Querida and Umbagog

Mi Querida established DTT's Connecticut broadleaf platform at NACSA. Triqui Traca and Mi Querida Black push the family in separate directions. Umbagog uses a more rustic broadleaf selection for a durable, value-conscious role; it is related in factory and leaf philosophy, not a substitute name for Mi Querida.

Sin Compromiso

Sin Compromiso is DTT's prestige expression built around Saka's no-compromise production brief at Joya de Nicaragua. The family includes core selections and special presentations, all of which should be documented individually rather than treated as one universal blend or availability status.

Muestra de Saka and Limited Projects

Muestra de Saka is a series of small-batch cigars created around a specific blend, size or idea. Production has involved Joya de Nicaragua and NACSA depending on the release. Unicorns, annual commemorative cigars and retailer projects require edition-level records with year, factory and quantity.

StillWell Star, Red Meat Lovers, Todos Las Dias and Polpetta

StillWell Star incorporates selected pipe-tobacco components in cigars made at Joya de Nicaragua. Red Meat Lovers is a NACSA-made broadleaf family, Todos Las Dias is a strong Nicaraguan project associated with Joya, and Polpetta repurposes selected broadleaf table cuts with long filler. Each answers a different brief.

Dunbarton Tobacco & Trust in the Ashology Network

The manufacturer page should be the parent hub for Saka's pre-DTT career, the 2015 founding, Steve and Cindy Saka's ownership, the Dunbarton name, independent distribution, the Joya de Nicaragua and NACSA relationships, and the principal portfolio families. Individual cigar pages should carry product evidence.

DTT should not receive one universal Ashology score. A Sobremesa from Joya de Nicaragua, Mi Querida from NACSA, StillWell Star aromatic blend and edition-specific Muestra de Saka are different products made for different purposes. Company history creates context; only a named cigar and vitola can be scored.
