Black Label Trading Company

Black Label Trading Company, commonly shortened to BLTC, is an independent premium-cigar company founded by James and Angela Brown. Its dark visual language, small-batch philosophy and blend-driven portfolio are closely connected to Fábrica Oveja Negra in Estelí, Nicaragua.

BLTC is both a brand company and part of a broader operating system. Black Works Studio is a related creative brand, Oveja Negra Brands provides sales and marketing for a group of labels, and Fábrica Oveja Negra produces cigars for those brands and selected outside clients.

James and Angela Brown Before BLTC

James and Angela Brown operated a Central America-focused travel business and spent significant time in Nicaragua. Visits to farms, tobacco warehouses and factories developed a shared interest in premium cigars and connected them with production mentor Armando Leiva.

James's earlier sommelier experience informed his approach to aroma, balance and blending, while Angela became a co-owner and central business partner. The company story should identify both founders rather than present BLTC as a one-person venture.

The 2013 Company Launch

Black Label Trading Company launched in 2013 with six blends offered across three vitolas. The range-first approach was intended to establish a complete company and demonstrate different blending directions rather than depend on a single debut cigar.

The original core developed into families such as Royalty, Salvation, Lawless and Last Rites. Anniversary and later releases should be connected to the 2013 milestone but maintained as separate dated products.

Opening Fábrica Oveja Negra

James and Angela Brown opened Fábrica Oveja Negra in Estelí in 2015. Oveja Negra means black sheep, a name that matches the company's independent, outsider identity and its emphasis on artisanal production.

The factory gave the Browns greater control over blending, rolling and limited-batch execution. Sources describe James as a partner and creative leader at the factory; ownership and operational titles should be verified independently from brand authorship.

Black Works Studio

Black Works Studio, styled BLK WKS, launched in late 2015 as an experimental showcase for the factory. James Brown described the project as a creative playground for blends and ideas influenced by art, film and music.

Killer Bee, NBK and Rorschach were the first releases. The brand now includes regular, limited, event and retailer-exclusive work, so exact blend, quantity, market and release year are essential metadata.

Oveja Negra Brands and a Broader Portfolio

Oveja Negra Brands is the unified sales and marketing group for BLTC, Black Works Studio and Emilio Cigars. Apostate Cigars joined the group in 2025, while distribution is centralized through L.J. Zucca.

Membership in the group does not automatically mean common ownership of every brand. Apostate, Emilio and other factory clients should retain their documented owners, founders and brand histories.

Ownership, Leadership and Manufacturing Model

Black Label Trading Company is co-owned by James and Angela Brown. James is the principal blender, creator and public product voice, while Angela is a co-founder whose business and factory role is part of the company's development.

The model integrates brands, a dedicated small factory and a shared commercial platform. Fábrica Oveja Negra makes BLTC and BLK WKS cigars and selected partner brands, while Oveja Negra Brands coordinates sales and marketing.

Last Rites, Royalty, Salvation and Lawless

These lines anchor the original BLTC core and demonstrate different wrapper and binder directions. Their shared launch history does not make them one blend, and each vitola should retain its own production record.

Deliverance and Bishops Blend

Deliverance and Bishops Blend are recurring BLTC platforms that move between regular, small-batch and anniversary expressions. Release year, size, production quantity and blend should be confirmed for each edition.

Morphine and Anniversary Releases

Morphine is one of BLTC's best-known dark-profile limited series and marked its tenth anniversary with multiple formats. La Madonna Negra, Eletto and other commemorative releases document company and factory milestones.

Black Works Studio Killer Bee and NBK

Killer Bee is recognized for distinctive cap and closed-foot treatments, with Green Hornet and other variants using different wrapper accents. NBK is a separate BLK WKS family that also appears in limited and retailer-exclusive forms.

Rorschach, Boondock and Creative Projects

Rorschach, Boondock, Paper Crane, Intergalactic and the Tiger Series show the studio's experimental role. Their visual relationships are important, but tobacco, factory quantity and availability remain release specific.

Black Label Trading Company in the Ashology Network

The manufacturer page should be the parent hub for James and Angela Brown, the 2013 launch, the 2015 factory, Black Works Studio, Oveja Negra Brands and the core portfolio. Individual cigar and partner-brand pages should hold blend, ownership and evaluation evidence.

BLTC should not receive one universal Ashology score. A core Last Rites, annual Bishops Blend, Morphine edition and multi-wrapper Killer Bee project use different tobaccos, formats and intentions. Only a named cigar and vitola can be evaluated.
